In its message commemorating the nation's independence, the Dominican Conference of Bishops has called upon the country's political parties to "purify their lists of candidates, closing the door on the incompetent, the ambitious and the corrupt". They added that it was "insensitive to run a costly and wasteful election campaign". They called for austerity instead of "making it burdensome and at the expense of the candidates", which "is an incentive (for politicians) to be corrupt in the future in order to compensate for absurd losses". The letter from the Dominican bishops and archbishops focused on the political parties and on the election campaign that is just beginning.
The message states that "the parties and politicians have suffered a notable reduction in public esteem and confidence" which represents a threat to the nation's democracy. For this reason, politicians should "restore the dignity of their profession for the good of themselves and the people". At the same time they believe that a "certain laxity and parsimony exists in the Public Power and that a more dynamic, fast and efficient reaction is needed for the problems that plague society and that do not get solved by themselves". The Conference of Bishops believes that votes at the next election should act "strictly according to their conscience, choosing those who can best serve the common good".
