Yielding to pressure from women's groups, the PRD party president has announced that deputy Julio Romero would not run for the PRD in the municipal and congressional election. "We need to have an ear to Dominican society. The PRD of these times needs to act in tune with the people, whether or not they are right," said Miguel Vargas Maldonado when approached after giving a lecture at a conference at the UASD university. He said that despite "Romero's great qualities as a PRD activist," he would not be on the PRD ticket for Santo Domingo East.
Romero had been campaigning for re-election, but a TV investigative report by Alicia Ortega revealed that he had had sex with an underage girl, got her pregnant and refused to accept paternity. It later emerged that this was the second child he had sired out of wedlock and refused to recognize. Romero has downplayed the issue, saying it was common in Dominican society.
