Operations at Las Americas International Airport (AILA-SDQ) were halted for over half an hour yesterday afternoon when a man aged 25-30 years failed in his attempt to catch a ride in the wheels compartment of a N-746AX Amerijet cargo plane. The plane was taking off en route to Miami when the pilot noticed the landing gear was partly open and tried to shut it. At that moment the man fell to the ground, and was killed instantly. Airport crews had to remove the remains from the runway.
The stowaway was not carrying any documents, as reported in Hoy.
A commission headed by General Francisco de Leon Rodriguez and Colonels Juan Francisco Tejada Genao and Luis Manuel Mejia is investigating the security breach. Airport spokesperson Yolanda Manan said that the airplane had arrived from Port of Spain, Trinidad and spent 2 hours on the runway loading cargo.
