President Leonel Fernandez arrived in the Mexican resort area of Cancun on Sunday to take part in the Rio Summit that will discuss support for Haiti in the aftermath of the earthquake, boosting trade and growth in the region, protecting and developing tourism, increasing regional security, climate change and several other topics.
The President traveled with Foreign Minister Carlos Morales Troncoso, the Presidency and Economy Planning and Development Ministers Cesar Pina Toribio and Temistocles Montas, and his press team.
The President is expected to take an active part in the discussions on Haiti.
The theme of this meeting of the Rio Group is "Challenges and opportunities in the Economic Context." The President is due to return tomorrow night.
In his opening speech, President Calderon of Mexico said that Mexico was a "Caribbean nation, powerfully Caribbean... For this reason, Mexico takes on its responsibility of participating actively in the region's development," he said.
