The PLD has announced its candidates for congressional and municipal posts in the election of next 16 May during a ceremony, headed by President Leonel Fernandez who is also the party's leader. During the event, the names of 29 Senate nominees, 118 nominees for the Chamber of Deputies, 93 for the post of mayor and 849 for membership in all the municipal councils were announced.
Most of the current PLD senators are seeking re-election for the extraordinary 6-year term.
The ruling party left 3 senator seats, 42 deputies and 300 mayor posts for the allies of the parties that make up the Progressive Bloc.
PLD general secretary Reinaldo Pared Perez stated that no change would be made that would imply a step backwards, using the slogan: "Siempre P'alante, nunca p'atras" - Always Forward, Not a Step Backwards.
The party's National Electoral Commission president Alejandrina German presented the names to be proclaimed to the assembly, and they were unanimously accepted. The assembly also approved a proposal by Cesar Pina Toribio that involves granting special powers to the Party leadership in order to draw up election pacts with other organizations as necessary.
Ramon Rogelio Genao and Joaquin Ricardo represented the PRSC at the event. The Progressive Bloc was represented by Fello Carrasco, Onefre Rojas, Maritza Lopez, Miguel Mejia, Rafael Agramonte and others.
Fernandez predicted that the party would win the May elections overwhelmingly, keeping its majority in Congress and increasing its presence in the municipalities.
After highlighting the contributions of the PLD-dominated National Congress in the measures the government has adopted to overcome the economic crisis, he stressed that this would have been impossible with a Congress led by another party.
