The Police have arrested an Italian national who is listed among his country's10 most wanted criminals. He is accused of committing several crimes and of belonging to the Cassotta mafia clan. The man was named as Saverio Loconsolo who fled to the Dominican Republic via Venezuela in order to evade a 25-year jail term for armed robbery, bribery, drug trafficking, commercial fraud, aggravated assault and criminal association, as well as several murders.
Loconsolo was arrested in an operation led by Colonel Rafael Atahualpa Cabrera Sarita, head of the Interpol Office in the beach resort of Juan Dolio in the province of San Pedro de Macoris.
Loconsolo, who is allegedly a member of the Cassotta mafia clan that operates in the southern region of Basilicata, had fled Italy in April 2009, a few days after he was accused of extortion and intimidation in an investigation following the arrest of 6 people.
The foreigner had been living in Juan Dolio where he was arrested together with his wife, his mother and his children, with whom he escaped a year ago to establish himself in the Dominican Republic.
The Cassotta clan is one of the most powerful criminal organizations in Italy, with authorities comparing it with the Marazarela clan whose main boss was arrested here by Interpol a year ago.
