The current water shortage has worsened potable water supplies in Santo Domingo. Diario Libre conducted an opinion poll among residents of low income barrios like Villa Francisca, Villas Agricolas and Villa Maria in the National District, who confirmed that they were suffering from a lack of water.
Local residents told Diario Libre reporters that for about a month they have only been receiving water twice a week, and the "little bit that arrives" only lasts for a few hours "that are not enough to fill anything".
Nevertheless, the Santo Domingo Water and Sewer Corporation (CAASD) reported that the Valdesia dam and reservoir, which supplies these sectors has remained stable, although its water levels have dropped a little because it has had to supply the Haina-Manoguayabo, Isa-Mana and Duey-Guananitos reservoirs whose levels have fallen by more than 50%.
El Caribe reports that thousands of gallons of water are being wasted in other areas. Nelson Geronimo, a community leader in Francia Nueva, says that a broken pipe is causing a loss of water that should be going to Los Mameyes and other parts of Villa Duarte that have spent several days without receiving water.
