The president of AES Dominicana, Marcos de la Rosa said that this week 120 megawatts of electricity would be generated at a plant that has been converted to natural gas. He said that AES Dominicana is switching to the lower cost natural gas sources and coal-fired generation for producing electricity.
He told El Caribe that the company is now importing 35% more natural gas. "We used to import 7 ships with natural gas. This is now up to 11 ships", he said on the Portada 15 TV program. De la Rosa said that they now have the capacity to generate 500 megawatts using natural gas, or about 20% of the total generation in the country.
The additional 120 megawatts will be in the form of a plant that was only used to serve the peaks in the system, and has now been converted to natural gas. The AES president expects that domestic and industrial usage of natural gas will gradually become the norm.
"The challenge is to lower the cost and make power generation more efficient, and AES is doing this by incorporating natural gas and coal," he said.
