Angel investors are operating in the country to back new entrepreneurs with ideas that could potentially generate jobs and exports. Diario Libre reports that angel investors have already invested US$550,000 in several projects including a portal for Hispanics in the US, a renewable energy project and an electricity plant that does not consume fuel, a sauna that consumes little energy and aloe vera biotechnology.
Enlaces, headed by Marcos Troncoso, favors strengthening this to become a national incubator of companies, an initiative he says should have the support of the government. He introduced John A. May, emeritus president of the US Association of Angel Investors who was here for a talk at Barna Business School.
Troncoso says that there are two incubator programs in the country - Proincube (Proindustria) and Emprende (at the CyberPark). He said that Emprende operates with a US$656,000 donation from the Inter-American Development Bank for a 3-year program that supports Emprende, Enlaces and entrepreneurial centers at Dominican universities. The program has been running for a year and a half.
