Interviewed in Mexico by journalist Hector Herrera Cabral, President Leonel Fernandez said that the government does not plan to sell the Dominican Petroleum Refinery (Refidomsa) to the private sector. Local business groups expressed an interest in purchasing a share in the refinery after the government bought back the Shell Company's 50% share.
The government had announced a deal to sell 49% of the shares to the Venezuelan state petroleum company, PDVSA, but Venezuela backed out of the deal. Fernandez said that the Refinery had produced RD$1.6 billion in earnings last year. He said the government would only contemplate selling to Venezuela or Petrobras of Brazil, according to a column by Aristofanes Urbaez in Listin Diario.
