Manuel de Jesus Castillo Pimentel of Granos Nacionales has asked President Leonel Fernandez to investigate alleged irregularities by Agriculture Minister Salvador (Chio) Jimenez in the handling of permits granted for the import of beans. Castillo said that the cabinet minister is granting privileges to those he seeks to favor, in violation of the DR-CAFTA agreement that assigns 80% of the import quota to traditional importers and 20% to new importers, El Caribe reports.
He said that Jimenez, who chairs the Farm Imports Commission, has violated the agreement by allocating a greater part of the quota to new importers. He said that in 2007, the traditional importers were only able to import 23% of the quota while the new ones were assigned 77%. Last year the situation was similar, the traditional importers were given 41% and the new ones 59%.
