Santiago prosecutor Yenny Berenice Reynoso says that there is a great deal of social complicity with drug traffickers that affects court hearings against drug dealers. She said it is outrageous and tragic that many institutions, such as neighborhood groups, clubs, associations, and even churches support people who have trafficked in drugs, trying to disguise them as decent individuals, as reported in Listin Diario. She said that often after long investigations and intelligence efforts, people are arrested in possession of kilos of drugs and other evidence. But then the social institutions come forth with documents purporting to show that these individuals are honest. She said that often in Santiago prominent drug traffickers even find protectors in civil society organizations. She said the support is attributed to fear of the drug dealers, their generosity in sharing their earnings to buy support and solving individual and community problems. "But these individuals who present themselves as generous to solve many of the community's problems with the money earned by selling drugs are the same people who give drugs to 11-year-olds to get them started on the vice," said Reynoso.
Today's Listin Diario editorial describes the individuals who bend to support drugs as "useful idiots".
