The European Union is going to set aside a further EUR15.33 million in non-refundable resources for the Dominican Republic to strengthen its educational programs along the Haitian frontier. The National Coordinator for European Development Funds, Domingo Jimenez and the head of the European Union Delegation, Irene Horejs, signed an agreement during a ceremony at the Presidential Palace. Jimenez said that the country would receive EUR30 million in donations to protect education and social plans, as well as resolving some of the unexpected expenses that occurred as a result of last year's world financial crisis.
The additional RD$800 million comes in the context of the "Country Strategy Document and the National Indicative Program" signed between the EU and the Dominican government in 2008 and which totals EUR179 million.
Jimenez told El Nuevo Diario that an early review of the agreement showed that the effects of the world financial crisis required an increase in the package and adapting the European Union's strategy to the current context of the Dominican Republic.
