Despite calls by the authorities to save water and many areas suffering water shortages, millions of gallons are wasted or lost each day in some parts of Santo Domingo. El Caribe reporters toured the city and came across several leaks, including one in Alma Rosa II where an underground leak comes to the surface at a water bottling plant on 19th Street. When they were asked why they had not reported the leak to the Santo Domingo Water and Sewer Corporation (CAASD) one of the owners said that they had called several times but nobody had come to fix the problem. The owner said that when one repair crew came, they asked for money to fix the leak.
Similar leaks were found on Bonaire Street and President Vasquez Street on the Mella Highway. However, water is not just lost in leakage. The reporters also found places where people are desperate for water, and other places where people waste it with no thought to the drought. Along streets in Los Jardines, Cristo Rey, La Puya, La Agustina, La 70, Villa Agricolas and Los Rios people are washing cars, motorcycles, driveways and sidewalks with their garden hoses. The CAASD says that 56% of the leaks that they fix are in homes with illegal connections, and that last year they fixed more than 36,000.
