The Second Collegiate Tribunal of Samana has issued individual 30-year sentences and fines of one million pesos to each of the accused: Rausto Andres Mercedes, Pedro Alexander Mota Hilario, Daniel Esteban Alvarez and Luciano Calcano. The 4 men were charged with transporting 435.28 kilograms of cocaine. Judge Carlos Moreno Abreu, a member of the National Department of Persecution of Drug Trafficking and Complex Crimes headed the investigations. According to District Attorney Juan Medina de los Santos, "these are exemplary sentences, and we will continue to fight the scourge of drug trafficking in a similar manner".
The District Attorney said that on 6 August 2009, the 4 men were arrested as they picked up 14 bundles with 30 packages, each containing a white powder, which were thrown from an aircraft that came from South America. The drop was made at Moron Beach (Playa Moron) in the Municipal District of El Limon in Samana province.
