The official launch of the book "Trujillo, my father, in my memory", written by Maria de los Angeles Trujillo (Angelita) was unsuccessful, due to the presence of anti-Trujillo protestors at the event that was to be held at the Hotel Santo Domingo and sponsored by the Universidad of the Caribbean (Unicaribe).
Reporters had gathered at the hotel entrance at 6pm for the start of the event that was set for 8pm, when several protestors discreetly entered the building.
At about 6:30 the slogans "Trujillo - murderer", "Long live the butterflies", and "Angelita - murderer", "Respect the Heroes of 30 May" and "Trujillo, killer and thief!" brought out the flashes and there was some pushing and shoving.
The protest was led mainly by the children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews, and friends of Antonio de la Maza, Luis Amiama Tio, Rafael Augusto Sanchez, Antonio Imbert Barrera and other victims of the dictatorship.
Minutes before the protest began, they were placing the reserved seating in the Caonabo Room, and a video feed direct from the JW Marriot Hotel in Miami showed the empty podium and a Dominican flag in the seat that was to be occupied by Angelita Trujillo. The sample copies of the memoir by dictator Rafael Leonidas Trujillo's daughter remained in their boxes.
The protestors told reporters, "They want to tarnish our heroes. Then, our grandchildren, who are they going to believe?" said Magda Mejia Ricart.
"She (Angelita Trujillo) can say whatever she wants, but what she is telling is a lie. All this is a mockery", said Isabel Rosario de la Maza.
According to details released about the book, Angelita Trujillo claims that several of the people involved in her father's execution were also responsible for the deaths of the Mirabal sisters. Dozens of protestors joined Magda and Isabel and neither the hotel security nor the warnings kept them from the room. "Trujillo, murderer", "Trujillo, killer!" they shouted while they opened the doors. Inside, some astonished guests watched as the group entered the room. The ones who had discreetly entered beforehand joined in the anti-Trujillo protest. They marched to the podium and sang the anthem honoring the members of the 14 June 1959 invasion. "They arrived full of patriotism, in love with a pure ideal!" they sang loudly. They also sang National Anthem several times.
Verbal altercations followed. One woman, who described herself as a Trujillo supporter, called the group "frauds", but she could do nothing against the voices of those who defended the people killed during the dictatorship, and she had to flee from the room. The same happened to Julieta Trujillo, Amable Romeo (Pipi) Trujillo Molina's daughter. "I think it is unfair", said Trujillo's niece.
"She is taking advantage of the freedom that our country has thanks to the fact that there was a group of men that executed her father", said Pilar Amiama, Luis Amiama Tio's daughter.
