According to the Director of the Ministry of Health's Mental Health Department, Jose Mieses, 90% of traffic accidents in the country are the result of excessive drinking. Diario Libre reports that this type of accident is the second greatest cause of death in the country after cardio-vascular disease. The study shows that deaths due to social or domestic violence and homicides associated with depression are also closely related to alcohol consumption. Mieses was speaking during a workshop about the management of disorders associated with drinking coordinated by the Pan-American Health Organization and the Public Health Ministry. He warned that alcohol abuse is not only a social problem but can become a risk factor that affects somatic, psychological and mental health, as it affects the whole central nervous system, the brain and the liver. It can also cause depression.
