Speaking to a reporter from El Caribe, Attorney General Francisco Dominguez Brito explained several of the reasons behind the wave of violence that has caught the population by surprise and has the population united in its demand for action from the authorities. Dominguez said that some people have made a career of robbery, but there are others that need to steal to maintain their drug addiction. He said that the most complicated cases are linked to drug dealing, because of the difficulties in prosecuting these criminals. He said that there have also been many cases recently of people who do not have a criminal record, who acquire a gun, and then go out drinking and end up killing someone over an argument. He said that state prosecutors need to prepare their cases correctly so that criminals are not released so easily. He also said that judges needed to be made aware of how dangerous certain individuals may be so that they are not be set free or on bail when they have track records of robbery or assault. Dominguez Brito also mentioned the 2,000 prisoners who were granted pardons during the previous administration, despite having three or four arrests for crime under their belts.

Meanwhile, as reported in Hoy, Father Rogelio Cruz says that the solution to crime in the DR needs to be community-driven. He said that the problems would only be solved when society organizes itself and agrees on an agenda for community development. "This country has solutions, but what has happened is that the group that is leading us has splintered us in such a way that we are eating one another."
