Former President Joaquin Balaguer's party, the PRSC, is marking the fourth anniversary of his passing in a very deep crisis characterized by the departure of major figures, a process that began in 2004 and continued this year resulting in two consecutive electoral defeats. A report by Diario Libre indicates that when he died, Balaguer left a directorate composed of 50 people and led by Rafael Bello Andino. This directorate was never able to maintain party unity, and neither has the current leadership under Federico Antun Batlle. Important PRSC figures who have left the party since Balaguer's death are the late Jacinto Peynado, Carlos Morales Troncoso, Donald Reid Cabral, Leonardo Matos Berrido, Aristides Fernandez Zucco, and Claudio de los Santos. All have become PLD allies, as well as more recent dissidents like Angel Lockward, Hector Rodriguez Pimentel, Alexandra Izquierdo and Modesto Guzman. The PRSC directorate and the dissident group will be holding separate memorial services on the anniversary of Balaguer's death.
