The PRD has sworn in Orlando Jorge Mera and Geanilda Vasquez as general party secretary and secretary of organization respectively, and repealed article 185 of their statutes that prohibited the party president and other members of the party leadership from running for elective posts. This now clears the way for Miguel Vargas Maldonado to run for the presidency in 2012.
Between speeches criticizing the current PLD government, the PRD swore in the new party leaders during its XXVII Ordinary National Convention that was held in Santiago's Arena del Cibao.
During his address to the assembly, Vargas Maldonado said that the legislative and municipal elections on 16 May would give the Dominican people an opportunity to eliminate the "10 purple plagues" that the PLD has brought to the country. He said that these plagues included joblessness, crime, corruption and poor quality education.
"Beginning today the powerful machinery of the PRD goes into action all over the country in order to lead our people forward in 2010 and to the triumph in 2012."
Jorge Mera, who is also the candidate for senator for Santiago, said that the PLD legislators have neither represented nor defended the interests of the province from the government. Former PLD member and aspiring candidate for the mayor's post, Gilberto Serulle, also spoke at the political event, with harsh criticisms of current mayor Jose Enrique Sued, accusing him of heading the most corrupt municipal government in history.
