President Leonel Fernandez hosted a visit by the Superintendent of Police in Puerto Rico, Jose Figueroa Sancha, at the Presidential Palace yesterday. Figueroa Sancha said that fugitive Puerto Rican drug trafficker Jose Figueroa Agosto's days on the run were numbered. As reported in Diario Libre, he said after meeting with the President: "We have all the resources available to capture Agosto and I made a commitment with the President".
Figueroa Sancha was in Santo Domingo to sign an agreement for sending Dominican police officers to Puerto Rico for training.
Local authorities have said they have not been able to trace a phone call made by a man who identified himself as Jose Figueroa Agosto to the Gobierno de la Manana morning talk show last December. The caller offered RD$30 million each for the heads of the chief of the Police and the president of the National Drug Control Department and another RD$30 million for whoever succeeds in capturing him.
Assistant prosecutor Franklin Soto said that the US Drug Enforcement Administration and Federal Bureau of Investigations are cooperating in the search for Figueroa Agosto. Figueroa Agosto had escaped from a Puerto Rican jail where he was serving a 209-year sentence.
The Puerto Rican Superintendent of Police said that Figueroa Agosto would have to find another RD$30 million to offer for his own head. He said that a threat against the chiefs of Police and DNCD in the DR is a threat to the superintendent of Police in Puerto Rico and all the Puerto Rican police, he said after meeting with the chief of the Police.
Interviewed on the Carmen Imbert Brugal morning radio talk show, political commentator and lawyer Francisco Alvarez Castellanos said that Figueroa Sancha had joined the "circus" that surrounds the case. He said that when there is a serious investigation, the investigators do not give statements of this type.
