Superintendent of Electricity Francisco Mendez says that the electricity service has been suffering since last Friday, due to the fact that several generators are out of service for breakdowns or due to a lack of fuel. He attributed a good part of the deficit to the reduced production from the San Felipe (Puerto Plata-the old Smith-Enron plant) generator that is only producing 70 megawatts (MW) of its 170MW capacity.
According to El Nuevo Diario, the government is trying to get fuel for the San Felipe generator using tanker trucks from the Refinery and from local distributors, until a ship arrives. He said that Los Mina I and II generators are also experiencing problems. Mendez said that the electricity production deficit was currently running between 25% and 27%, which is a little higher than the usual 20%-25%, and this means that some areas that do not normally experience blackouts are now being affected.
