The National Water Committee met yesterday and reported that the shortages affecting many parts of the National District could begin to ease off in April. Even though they announced that the service is improving, there is still a 63 million gallon daily deficit. Ramon Rivas, the director of the Santo Domingo Water and Sewer Corporation (CAASD), said that the current deficit is about 15% of demand, and that the CAASD is supplying 405 million gallons to customers in Santo Domingo. The committee, appointed by the President to monitor the situation during this drought period, includes the head of the CAASD, the director of the National Hydraulic Resources Institute (INDRHI), the National Potable Water and Drainage Institute (INAPA), the Dominican Hydroelectric Enterprise (Ege-Hid) as well as the head of the Santiago Water and Sewer Corporation (CORAASAN). Yesterday's meeting was chaired by Cesar Pina Toribio.
The meeting dealt with some of the measures that are being taken to tackle the dry spell, such as the 22 electric pumps that are being installed in Jimani and 11 other pumps being installed in Valdesia, Sabana Yegua and in Azua where water supplies are down by 70%.
