On Monday, 1 March, the White House hosted a briefing for Dominican-American leaders to discuss public policy issues affecting Dominicans in the United States. Over 100 community leaders, educators, and elected officials traveled to Washington, DC for the briefing that was done in commemoration of Dominican Independence Day. Dominicans who were appointed by the Obama Administration delivered speeches at the briefing in their respective appointed areas. These included: Alejandra Castillo (Special Advisory to Undersecretary for International Trade, Department of Commerce), Julissa Reynoso (Deputy Asst. Secretary for Western Hemisphere Affairs, Dept. of State), Cid Wilson (member of the National Museum of the American Latino Study Commission, Dept. of the Interior), and Tom Perez (Asst. Attorney General for Civil Rights, Dept. of Justice).
Perez is the highest-ranking Dominican American appointed official in the US. The briefing included others speakers from the US Department of Education, US Census Bureau, and The White House Domestic Policy Council. Also attending were Dominican Ambassador to the US Roberto Saladin, Nestor Montilla, president of the Dominican American National Roundtable, Rhode Island State Senator Juan Pichardo and superstar athlete Luis Castillo who plays for the San Diego Chargers and is the only Dominican American playing in the National Football League.
