National Drug Control Department (DNCD) agents have discovered two secret airfields in the Sierra de Bahoruco, used for landing planes loaded with drugs from South America. DNCD chief Major General Rolando Antonio Rosado Mateo said that the DNCD and Joint Task Force (Deproser) had intercepted a drug drop of cocaine from an airplane near the coastal town of Enriquillo in the province of Barahona on Monday. Agents arrested Norberto Felipe Fernandez Olive, Freddy Nelson Perez Borges, Antonio Armando Mendez Pina, Fernando Inoa Nunez, Noe Balipto Agustin, Wilkin Sanchez Mateo and Carlin Nicolas Samboy, as well as a South American, Oscares Morales Villamizar.
Rosado Mateo said that a specialized DNCD team had moved through the area, where it was reinforced with members of the Navy and Deproser, in order to follow up on an illegal flight track reported by the System of Information Exchange between Cooperating Nations, which is based in Florida. The radar track was detected while the plane was in Curacao airspace. The men who were detained claimed that they were in the area looking for land to be used to cultivate beans, but this was dismissed out of hand by Rosado Mateo due to the arid nature of the land where the suspected drug traffickers were picked up.
