The government has announced the opening of a bidding process for the construction of a highway between Bavaro, Miches and Sabana de la Mar. This roadway would create a sort of "coastal highway" around the eastern and northern coast of the eastern part of the Dominican Republic. The route from Bavaro to Sabana de la Mar will open some of the world's most beautiful and fragile beaches to tourism and eco-tourism in the provinces of La Altagracia and El Seibo. The project, according to Hoy newspaper, also includes the construction of a new ferry dock. This would complete the cycle of highways serving the Samana Peninsula (Santo Domingo - Samana and Las Terrenas, Sanchez, Nagua) and bring Santo Domingo closer to the east and northeast of the country, reaching as far as Rio San Juan and Cabarete on the north coast.
Public Works Minister Victor Diaz Rua will publish the opening of bids in the press on Monday.
During yesterday's inauguration of the new bridge over the Soco River, Diaz Rua spoke about the new national road-paving program, while Bishop Nicanor Pena blessed the new bridge.
The Guido Gil Bridge over the Soco River links San Pedro de Macoris province and La Romana province. The 294-meter bridge is 23.60 meters wide and was built at a cost of US$1.36 billion.
The bridge is named in honor of Guido Gil, a labor lawyer, historian and social activist who mysteriously went missing during the Balaguer years.
