The Puntacana Group has denied claims that it had given lands to US Representative Charles Rangel, who took a temporary leave from his post as chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee on Wednesday while the House Ethics Committee studies issues connected to the investigation of his income tax returns.
The Puntacana Group issued a statement yesterday stating that, "All of the information that appeared in yesterday's edition of El Nacional about Charles Rangel's property in Puntacana Resort and Club is false and deserves no credibility". The Puntacana Group revealed that in 1987 the US legislator purchased a small villa in the Puntacana Beach Resort that is now part of Hotel Puntacana. The press statement by the group said that the figures quoted in the article could not be reached even if the value of the property was multiplied several times over. El Nacional had reported that the villa was worth US$3 million. Rangel is in serious trouble over income tax issues as well as problems relating to apartments in Harlem, the district he has represented since 1971.
