There is a slight shortage of refined sugar in the local marketplace, resulting in price increases. Merchants questioned by reporters from the Nuevo Diario said that the local market is feeling the effects of sales to markets in Haiti that are paying higher prices for the goods. Scarcity is felt more in the southern and border provinces with Haiti.
According to the reporters, in some places sugar now costs 33% more.
Sugar was seen to be in short supply is many supermarkets in Santo Domingo and some of the major chains were apparently having difficulties with their traditional suppliers.
The government recently authorized imports.
