Santo Domingo, American Capital of Culture 2010, now needs to choose its seven treasures of tangible cultural heritage. The Ministry of Culture will be coordinating the selection of buildings, historic and cultural places and monuments.
The International Bureau of Cultural Capitals announced that Santo Domingo is the 8th city in the world to carry out a campaign to choose these sites. Other cities in the world that have highlighted their treasures are Barcelona, Madrid and Badalona (Spain); Brasilia (Brasil); Nizhny Novgorod (Rusia); Sarajevo (Bosnia and Herzegovina), and Asuncion (Paraguay).
Xavier Tudela, president of the IBCC, said that the campaign seeks to promote among city residents and the world the treasures of a particular city and to motivate the visitation of these special attractions.
The campaign that will be announced shortly by the Ministry of Culture, organizer of the American Capital of Culture event in Santo Domingo. The campaign will also serve to establish new touristic routes and to promote community involvement.
Any person or entity in the DR can present a selection of the treasures from 22 March to 12 April 2010 by sending an email to info@cac-acc.org
The email should provide the personal and contact details of who makes the proposal, the name of the treasure, its significant characteristics and a photograph.
Citizens will be polled and for this a voting form will be available from 3 to 23 May 2010 online. Only one vote per person is permitted, but each person can vote for seven treasure candidates.
On 25 May 2010, the seven treasures of Santo Domingo will be announced and promotion of these will start nationwide and abroad.
