Michaelle Jean, Governor General and Commander-in-Chief of Canada and her husband Jean-Daniel Lafond are scheduled for a 9-10 March visit to the DR. They are expected at 9:30pm when they will be welcomed by Canada ambassador Todd Kuiack at Las Americas International Airport.
On 10 March during the morning, round tables with representatives from civil society will discuss the relationship between Canada and the DR. Their excellencies are also scheduled to meet with leading members of the Canadian community and Dominicans who have contributed to furthering bilateral relations between the two countries during an event hosted by the Ambassador of Canada to the Dominican Republic at noon.
Afterwards a meeting with President Leonel Fernandez at the Presidential Palace is scheduled. On the agenda is to discuss the two countries' relationship, as well as efforts made by Dominicans to assist Haitians after the earthquake.
Their Excellencies will also meet with the Minister of Education and the Minister of Health and other key ministers.
President Fernandez and First Lady Margarita Cedeno will host lunch for the visiting dignitaries at the Presidential Palace.
In the afternoon, a visit to the Life and Hope Children's Home orphanage is scheduled, where the Canadian delegation will meet children, many of whom are originally from Haiti.
Also on the agenda for the afternoon is a round table on the Artibonite River rehabilitation project in the region bordering Haiti and the DR.
Accompanying Jean and Lafond are Alexandre Leveque, director Caribbean, Central America & Regional Policy, Central America Division of the Ministry of Foreign Relations of Canada (DFAIT); Denyse Cote, professor and researcher at the Universite du Quebec and Mireille Mathieu, vice-rector for International Relations at the Universite de Montreal.
