The director general of the United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organization (Unesco) is visiting today. She is on a 4-day tour of the DR and Haiti.
She arrived last night and on Tuesday traveled to Port-au-Prince to evaluate damages to the cultural patrimony in Haiti and make contributions to education.
She is expected to return on Wednesday for activities coordinated by the Ministry of Culture.
Her term began in January and this is her visit to Latin America.
During her stay in the DR, she will tour the Colonial City of Santo Domingo.
Her visit coincides with 2010 year in which Santo Domingo is declared the American Capital of Culture.
She is also scheduled to visit the Dominican Global Foundation for Democracy and Development (Funglode).
She is traveling with Bernard Hadjadj, special envoy to Haiti for the Unesco; Herman van Hooff, director of the Unesco Regional Office for Culture in Latin America, and Ambassador and Permanent Delegate of the Dominican Republic to the UNESCO, Laura Faxas.
She was received in the Dominican Republic by Rosa Hernandez Grullon, ambassador to the Unesco.
"We are very concerned regarding the conservation of cultural objects, but we also have projects for education", she told the press upon her arrival. "Culture needs to be protected, both tangible and intangible," she said.
