Central Electoral Board (JCE) president Julio Cesar Castanos Guzman revealed that the JCE received RD$344 million yesterday for the celebration of the upcoming congressional and municipal elections on 16 May 2010. He said that a further RD$200 million would be given to the board over the next few days, bringing the total to RD$544 million of the RD$545 million that the JCE says it need to hold the elections.
He added that the funds would be distributed as soon as the parties have decided on all their nominations. The deadline for registering the names of the candidates is 17 March.
Regarding the audit by the Chamber of Accounts, Castanos Guzman said that next week the full board would meet in order to take a decision about the audit that the Chamber of Accounts wants to carry out at the JCE. Poor timing and lack of prudence is one concern, but this will have to be decided by the full board, he said. He said the Chamber of Accounts had sent a letter announcing the decision to carry out an audit of the JCE's internal procedures.
