Business, tourism and environmental organizations from Cabarete are asking the ruling PLD party and its ally the PRSC to refrain from presenting the candidacy of Gabriel (Canoa) Mora for mayor of the Cabarete municipal district. Letters were sent to President Leonel Fernandez, who is president of the PLD, and to Foreign Minister Carlos Morales Troncoso, president of the PRSC.
The Sosua Development Association, the Cabarete Tourism Companies Corporation and the Association for the Sustainable Development of Sosua are disputing Mora's candidacy Mora on the grounds that he has a pending court case for environmental crimes and whose administration is questioned by a "provisional audit" of the Chamber of Accounts for irregular management of funds in 2004.
In a press release, the organizations report that Canoa was arrested in December 2008 for dumping landfill into the Cabarete lagoon, a protected area. In November 2009 an agreement was signed with the Ministry of Environment in which he acknowledged the crime and others he had committed in the past and he agreed to make repairs. The agreement was aimed at stopping the case from being taken to court. A Puerto Plata court nevertheless rejected the agreement and ordered the trial to proceed.
The business representatives recall the case when Canoa privatized the municipal treasury with a contract with people they described as "rogue businessmen who demanded exorbitant taxes from citizens and area companies". The community confronted the anomalous situation and the scandal broke, leading the contract to "disappear."
"The citizens and entities in Cabarete do not deserve a situation where two of the most important political parties in the country present voters with a candidate with these credentials to lead our district," says the letter. They ask if the PRSC and the PLD do not have citizens with a proven track record among their ranks who respect the law and are capable of honest management of the municipality?
The agreement was signed by Marino Garcia, executive vice president of the Sosua Development Association; Porfirio Garcia, vice president of the Cabarete Development Association; Michel Gay-Crosier, president of the Association for the Protection of Environment and Tourism of Cabarete; and Luis Manuel Vasquez, president of the Cabarete Neighborhoods Association.
