Blackouts have increased once again in Santo Domingo and the provinces of the East and throughout the Cibao Valley, with the AES Andres and the San Felipe going off line. AES Andres produces 200 megawatts and the San Felipe unit about 180 megawatts.
According to the Superintendent of Electricity, at 6 pm yesterday the electricity deficit was 582 megawatts, equal to 31%, with total generation at 1,282 megawatts and demand at 1,871 megawatts. The AES generation plant left the system yesterday and will be out of service until the 24 March for maintenance, and this has increased the blackouts.
Meanwhile, the Public Electricity Corporation (CDEEE) announced that Ede Norte and Ede Sur with have savings of US$17.8 million due to the purchases of electricity produced from natural gas, as a result of the agreement signed with AES Dominicana. The announcement was made by Celso Marranzini, the executive vice-president of the CDEEE, accompanied by Marco de la Rosa the president of AES Dominicana, who pointed out that this agreement came about because of the highly competitive price of natural gas compared to fuel oil.
