New York State Assemblyman Jose Peralta won yesterday's special election in Queens, New York for the vacant State Senate seat against Hiram Monserrat. Peralta's Senate victory makes him the first Dominican-American State Senator in New York State history and only the second Dominican Senator ever in US history (Juan Pichardo of Rhode Island is the first Dominican American State Senator US history, winning his seat in 2002). Monserrat was expelled from the New York State Senate following his misdemeanor conviction for assaulting his girlfriend, which got wide media attention since it was caught on videotape. A special election was held to fill the Senate vacancy and Monserrat tried to regain his expelled seat as an Independent. But Peralta, who had the official support of the Democratic party won overwhelmingly with 66% of the vote vs. 27% for Monserrat. The Republican candidate, Robert Beltrani, came in third with 7 percent with 94% of the votes counted. Peralta, 37, was first elected to the New York State Assembly in 2002.
Peralta will take his new office today and be sworn as New York State Senator in Albany, NY.
