The runner up to Miss Universe 2009, Miss DR Ada Aimee de la Cruz will campaign alongside PRD candidate for mayor in a northern Santo Domingo municipality. At an event on 17 March at the Jet Set Discotheque in Santo Domingo, Rocio Castellanos was crowned Miss DR to replace De la Cruz. By turning politician, De la Cruz also resigns her responsibilities as first finalist of the Miss Universe pageant.
De la Cruz will run for deputy mayor for the PRD in Santo Domingo Norte. The 25-year old is a native of Villa Mella in the municipality of Santo Domingo Norte.
President of the PRD, Miguel Vargas Maldonado made the announcement on Tuesday, 16 March that De la Cruz would be the running mate alongside party candidate Francisco Fernandez.
De la Cruz said she accepted the challenge as an opportunity to work for the welfare of her hometown. She motivated women, youths and the population of Santo Domingo Norte to give her "a vote of trust."
