Santo Domingo's water supplies have fallen by 100 million gallons, about 22% of demand. The city's Water and Sewerage Corporation (CAASD) director Ramon Rivas has called on residents to ration the use of water. "What is being wasted in one area is needed in another. The rivers are not getting any water", he said.
Today the city celebrates World Water Day, a good opportunity for reminding people to use water only for urgent needs. The United Nations has designated 22 March as World Water Day with the aim of promoting awareness of the conservation of ecosystems and human welfare.
Water from the Valdesia Dam is being transferred to the other systems. The CAASD reported that Haina-Manoguaybo is currently running a 50 million gallon deficit, which is 65.4% less than its normal supply. The Isa-Mana aqueduct has fallen off by 9.5 million gallons a day, equivalent to 73% of its average supply.
The current crisis is worse in the barrios and the upper parts of Los Alcarrizos and Santo Domingo West, which are supplied by Duey-Guananitos, the system most affected by the current drought. Duey-Guananitos is currently showing a reduction in its daily production of 8.5 million gallons, nearly 81% of its normal service.
