A short-circuit in the underground high-tension line system that services Las Americas International Airport caused havoc for passengers yesterday. The airport's electricity system failed and the main terminal lost power. Hundreds of people were stranded for long periods as only one of the boarding gates was operating. The incident began at 12:30pm.
Yolanda Manan, spokesperson for airport operating company Aerodom, said that digital service was restored at 1:30pm allowing in-coming flights to land.
Teams from the Public Electricity Company (CDEEE) installed two emergency generators for lighting in some areas, and work is due continue today to repair the damage to one of the sub-stations.
Service was first restored at the north terminal, but power in the south terminal had not been restored as late as 9:30pm, as reported in Listin Diario, causing a long list of flight delays. Many passengers had to be checked in manually.
CDEEE personnel told Hoy reporters that the emergency electricity back-up system at the airport, a non-regulated client of AES Dominicana, did not come on-line after the blackout. CDEEE and Ede-Este personnel were on hand to assist in the restoring of power.
