While the figures don't always tally, the National Police is reporting a reduction in traffic fatalities in 2009. During last year 1,020 people lost their lives in traffic accidents across the country, according to National Police statistics for 2009, delivered to the National Congress last week.
There were 971 male and 118 female victims, including 97 foreigners and 17 members of the National Police.
According to the data, 486 people were killed in collisions, 221 were hit by vehicles, 109 fell off motorcycles or pickup trucks, 70 were killed when their vehicle flipped over and 23 crashed into telephone poles, trees or walls.
The greatest number of traffic accidents occurred in the province of Santo Domingo, with 171, followed by San Cristobal with 91, La Vega with 79, Santiago with 67 and the National District with 62. Also included were Plata Plata with 52 people killed, La Altagracia (Higuey and Punta Cana) with 47, Monsignor Nouel (Bonao) and Duarte (San Francisco de Macoris) province with 29.
The provinces with the lowest numbers of fatalities were San Jose de Ocoa, Salcedo, Elias Pina and Pedernales with just one fatality each. Hato Mayor had 4, Bahoruco and Santiago Rodriguez had 5 each and Independencia and Dajabon had 6 cases each. The police statistics show that 559 of the victims lost their lives in motorcycle accidents, and 350 in accidents involving other types of vehicles.
According to the Metropolitan Transport Authority (AMET), the number of people killed in traffic accidents during the past year was down by 15% from the year before, 2008, despite the fact that the total number of vehicles increases by more than 136,000 vehicles. Most of the new vehicles were motorcycles, whose owners cause most of the fatal vehicular accidents, more than 70% of the total.
