The man who apparently passed himself off as a "legal advisor" to the US citizens from Idaho who were arrested for trying to take more than 30 children from Haiti into the DR was arrested in Santo Domingo on Friday. Dominican authorities announced the arrest of Jorge Torres Puello, who is wanted on child trafficking charges in El Salvador and the United States. US Marshals Service and other US law enforcement agencies teamed with Dominican authorities in the search for Torres. He was arrested late on Thursday night at the McDonald's parking lot near the Diamond Mall in Santo Domingo.
Torres used a variety of names and aliases and falsely described himself as a lawyer. When New York Times reporters asked him about trafficking charges against someone of a similar name and appearance in El Salvador, he dropped out of sight. He had been previously seen in many videos taken of the Idaho church group members who were accused of child abduction in Haiti.
In El Salvador, Torres faces charges of human trafficking and exploitation of minors for pornography and prostitution.
In the United States he faces accusations of alien smuggling in Vermont and of probation violations for fraud in Pennsylvania.
According to US officials, he is also wanted in Canada. John Morton, a leading Homeland Security official, said that outstanding cooperation between law enforcement agencies had led to the arrest.
