An earthquake registering 4.6 points on the Richter scale, whose epicenter was located between Santiago and Puerto Plata in the mountains near Guananico caused panic in several towns in the Cibao region and the north coast last night. The seismic event occurred at 10:53pm on Sunday, as reported by the UASD seismological institute.
The United States Seismological Institute measured the earthquake at 4.4 magnitude. It was located the quake at 19.7 North and 70.9 West. The quake was at a depth of 10 kilometers and was located 17 kilometers to the northeast of the town of Esperanza in the province of Valverde.
In Santiago, dozens of people were seen running out into the streets in fear of the earthquake. Similar scenes were reported in Puerto Plata.
A 7.5 magnitude earthquake has been forecast for this area.
