Some vehicle owners are experiencing problems renewing their license plates. Most of the problems stem from differences in the personal identification number ("cedula") or in the car's registration number. There are also numerous vehicles that have "non-transferable" stamped on the registration papers and these need to be updated. Other cases include vehicles reported stolen and vehicles that were imported tax-free. All of these cases are sent to the Director General of Internal Revenue (DGII) offices to sort out each problem. The director of the DGII Motor Vehicle Department told reporters from El Caribe that there were about 10,000 vehicles with "problems". So far, over 10,000 people have renewed their vehicle registration.
