President Leonel Fernandez headed up a meeting of the commission responsible for drawing up the preliminary draft of the proposals for constitutional change. The commission, headed by Monsignor Agripino Nunez Collado, is going to look for 12 or 15 noted jurists and constitutional scholars to write up the rough draft. The commission is also trying to figure out just how to incorporate all the suggestions expected from the announced "popular consultations". The commission will use a document written in 2001 and incorporate the suggestions that come from those consulted. No names were mentioned as to possible consultants. The ruling party will be majority in Congress as of 16 August, and thus will have the upper hand in mandating the changes the government would like to impose.
