The La Altagracia Maternity Hospital in Santo Domingo is treating a lot more Haitian women since the January earthquake. According to the Listin Diario, the percentage of Haitians traveling to give birth in the nation's largest maternity hospital has climbed from 16% of the total number of patients to 26% of the total.
According to hospital employees, many of the women arriving from Haiti are in very poor condition as a result of basic health issues and the lack of any prenatal care. As a result the maternal death rate of the country has risen.
According to Dr Juan Cid Troncoso, the director of the hospital, when you are dealing with a national reference hospital, it can be expected that mortality rates are higher because patients come from all parts and in all kinds of condition. He said that of the 10 maternal deaths registered so far this year, five were from Haiti. He said that one of them came with a massive infection after spending several days under a tent in Haiti. Cid explained that two others came from La Romana and Los Mina, also in very difficult condition.
While this high rate of Haitian women giving birth is new for Santo Domingo, public hospitals in cities closer to Haiti regularly have rates higher than 26% of Haitian women giving birth.
