Civil Defense authorities reported banning swimming at163 swimming holes or beaches around the country, known for their perilous conditions. Civil Defense said that 14,350 volunteers in 1,435 aid station all over the country would be on hand to assist travelers from Wednesday, 31 March until Sunday 4 April, Holy Week.
According to the Operations Department of CD, doctors, paramedics, aid workers and specialists in search and rescue are among the volunteers. Aid stations are being located at strategic points in beach and river swimming areas, and along highways and avenues.
Participating in the Easter operation are 27 ambulances and five mobile hospitals. Nine regional command posts are being set up to assist vacationers who take advantage of the long Easter break. Schools in the DR close on Monday, 28 March and many do not resume until Monday, 5 April or Tuesday, 6 April.
