City Mayor Roberto Salcedo, who is running for mayor for his third term, turned down the opportunity offered by the American Chamber of Commerce to debate what the city needs with his closest contender for the post, Alfredo Pacheco of the PRD. The candidate who wins in 2010 will stay on for six years, through 2016.
PRD candidate Alfredo Pacheco criticized that Salcedo despite having a budget of RD$24 billion, and being responsible for a reduced area of 94 kms, has little to show for his 8 years in city government.
Pacheco announced he would start the rain drainage system of the city. He says he hopes to complete the first two of 12 systems that need to be built. He also promised city lighting, an increase and improvement in the training of municipal police, remodeling and construction of fresh produce markets, recycling of solid wastes, educational campaigns and more investments in sports and culture. He spoke also of his plans for vocational schools, repair of sidewalks and cemeteries and major improvements of the sea-bordering Malecon.
He criticized that Salcedo has divided the city into two - one the high rise and commercial center and the other where the rest of residents live. He says his administration would be participative and fully accountable.
