In the past four years, 32,683 Haitian women have given birth at Dominican public hospitals. Statistics of the Ministry of Public Health show the DR has spent RD$284 million to assist the Haitian women, as reported in Listin Diario.
Of the births, 27,458 were natural births, and 5,225 by c-section. On average, a natural birth costs RD$10,000 and a c-section, RD$15,000.
The Haitian mothers receive a birth certificate indicating the child was born here and the birth has been registered in the Book of Foreigners (Libro de Extranjeria). With that document the parent can declare the child in the country of origin or the respective embassy.
Health Minister Bautista Rojas Gomez says that anyone who seeks services at a public hospital is not denied these, and the physicians to do not check migratory status. Service is provided regardless whether the mother will return to Haiti or resides in the DR.
Most Haitians giving birth in the DR, do not have legal documentation.
