I never had a problem with the customs guy's when I went through, just checked one bag and told me to go. No one in front of me got asked, maybe it was a good day?

i may try pop, but for right now sti is more than $100 dollars cheaper and i only pay $30 for someone to pick me up from the airport...so i'm saving $70

My last trip going thru POP they didn't even take the declaration form that you get on the place. I just walked right by them. They weren't even looking my way.

It looks like they are trying to make STI into the central airport in DR. All the US based airlines are going there.

Actually on my first trip last year I slowed down at the desks they hacvve there and the guy almost laughed at me and waved me through. This year I didn't slow down and walked right over to the taxis.

I think it also depends on how you look as well. I've read that if you're dressed very well, you have a greater chance of them stopping you than if you're just dressed in a T-shirt and shorts.

Also, I think the that they knew it was a charter and most of the people were going to buses for the AI and they didn't want to get in the way.

Never had any problems at POP at all. I never had any of the guys ask me for any paper....yet. But that problem is minimal, and not that serious. You got a cab picking you up for 30 bucks? That's much better than I got coming from there. I paid 50, and they start at 65.

That $30 cab ride from sti. sounds like a good deal. How bout posting his number or email.
As it is now will have to take a cab to bus station, then bus to pop, then motochoncho to hotel. That cabbie might even save a life or two. Later, SB

I am with you Dogwood that cab ribe from STI drives me insane. And driving through those mountains wasn't very pleasant either. I haven't booked my ticket for April yet as I am hoping the EWR - POP drops in the next few days. If it doesn't I am 99% sure I will book EWR - POP anyway and just pay the extra $140. I hate that long as cab ride. And they I have to leave for the airport twice as early when I am leaving which makes things twice as depressing (can't even stay til passions opens).

However, Delta is talking that bankruptcy shit due to fuel costs and other things. The fuel costs are killing all the airlines. For the NYC cats, we already lost POP, i hope we don't lose STI.

They go to the AI'S and get shitty service and food. Once and only once do most Americans go to the DR. They try to save a few bucks and leave feeling it was not worth it. I have been to some nice places for close to the same price as a regularly planned trip to Playa Dorado. My first time to the DR was a last minute get away to Playa Dorado for short money. Showed up and i was horrified and thought the place a shit hole. Got drunk, packed up and went to the Palace for a few nights. After spending 30 days at different places in Sosua in the next 6 months i did a last minute long weekend deal again at the Playa Dorado. After my airfare it came to $50 a night for me and a chica. I loved the place. I loved the free Presidente and local drinks and ate more than $50 worth of food a night. Rented a car and it was the best trip i have had only because i now knew the area and many people so i only ate breakfast and dinner there and went back out about 10 pm to Sosua.
Now they are pushing Punta Cana here in Boston with no specials in the Sunday paper to POP. I also see there are cruise ships that stop in Samana and La Romana is getting the nature hike type tourist. For you guys in NYC you do not know how jealous i am that on average it is $275 more for me to get to anyplace in the DR compared to you.

Im looking at these prices and they are not bad but you have to look at the two sides which right now I have a dilema :? Im looking maybe to fly to Santiago and this time I may not rent a car but if you add on the taxi prices round trip and if I dont take the caribe tours bus it comes out being the same price in the long run if I just had flew into Puerto Plata. I have been flying JFK to Santiago lately and also renting a car I pay the same price or more on the airfare to Santiago and renting the car and getting gas etc....

From the NYC area Delta is cheaper.

I just booked JFK-STI RT Jan 5-16 2006 for $273.60 (total, all taxes and fees included).

AA from JFK was $358. Continental from Newark was $324. They both fly into POP.

I'm going to spend a couple days exploring Santiago on the front & back end of this trip. Then use Caribe Tours to the North Coast.
