Local export sales to Haiti grew by 61% in February, compared with the same period last year. In the first two weeks of March, exports were up by 31%. This was expected to happen after the 7.5-magnitude earthquake that destroyed the Haitian capital Port-au-Prince in January.
Speaking at a Dominican Association of Exporters (ADOEXPO) luncheon meeting, Customs Department (DGA) head Rafael Camilo said that the local manufacturing sector has benefited from the upswing in exports. He added that commercial, transport and farming sectors have also increased exports to Haiti.
Camilo warned, however, that this increased demand for products and services is already causing prices to rise in the DR, saying that brown sugar, soy oil, poultry and bread prices had increased.
