In the 16 May congressional and municipal elections, 6,914 women will be competing for posts, out of the 16,190 total candidates registered on 17 March. This number represents 42.7% of the total 4,036 posts up for election, 1,346 of which will go to women. This does not include the women who might be elected as senators among the 32 possible seats.
Of the 134 registered candidates for senators, there are 16 women. Three were registered by the PLD and 6 were registered by the PRD, 2 by MIUCA, 2 by the PRSD, one by Dominicans for Change (DxC), one by the PRI, and one by the UDC.
For the municipalities, political parties are required to present alternate female candidates for the posts of Mayor and Deputy Mayor, so that women constitute 50% of these posts.
Of the 1,149 city council seats, 279 should go to women, and an equal number would be applied for the substitute members.
For the directors of the 229 Municipal Districts (DM), 76 will be run by women. This also applies to the deputy directors of the Municipal Districts.
Regarding the 20 deputies that the DR will send to the Central American Parliament (Parlacen), 6 of those posts are designated for women, and the same number will apply to the substitutes. Likewise, of the 5 at-large deputies, at least 2 will be women.
